When your looking for a new job many of the companies that you may approach will need you to fill in an application form which has been a standard practise for many years. When filling in the application form they will ask a bit more about your schooling and working history and may ask you for references they can contact.
With references already in place you can attach them to the application and give the employer an ability to see the reasons why he should bring you in for an interview. By attaching references to your application that have already been aquired you will save your potential employer a lot of time and also give yourself a better chance of getting the interview a lot quicker.
Companies will ask for references as they will want to know why you may have left your previous role and how you worked when you were there as it gives them an insight into who you are and how you may benefit their business should they emply you. Many job hunters will not add referneces and just give the details of someone to contat to aquire one so you can see why we think its so important to have them in place already.
There are a few different types of referenecs to think about. Firstly, work refereneces so your ex boss and what he/she feels about what you brought to their business in terms of skills and general work ethics. Lastly, character references give your potential new employer the ability to see what your character is like. Character references can be written by friends and should convey their real thoughts about your character.
By having 1 of each you will be able to pre-empt your potential new employer and hopefully get yourself in the chair for an interview quicker than others.
